Rarely ever does any relationship advertise its problem areas – frequently it’s a slow trickle of little things that only become an issue when you’re realize the water’s up to your neck. Still, that doesn’t keep Sara Evans from wishing it had just been spelled out for her from the beginning in the new song “Marquee Sign,” the first single from an upcoming new album.

Written by Evans with Jimmy Robbins and Heather Morgan, “Marquee Sign” finds Evans applying her signature vibrato to a sleek, pop-tinged arrangement that combines moody instrumental atmospherics with a restless groove. “If you woulda been lit up like a marquee sign, I coulda saved myself some wasted time,” she sings, her frustration echoed by the watery peals of lead guitar. Tequila, cigarettes – easy to resist, she says, and far less cunning than the ex flame she’s describing.

“Marquee Sign,” which features vocals from Evans’ 14-year-old daughter Olivia, is the lead single from Words, due out July 21st. The independent release is Evans’ first in three years and includes 13 new original songs, plus an acoustic version of the Number One hit “A Little Bit Stronger.”
