It’s been a year of firsts for Luke Combs, who topped the country charts last month with his debut single, “Hurricane.” This morning, he made his national television debut on ABC’s Today, playing “Hurricane” with help from a guitar-heavy backup band.

As co-host Carson Daly pointed out during a pre-performance interview, Combs recorded “Hurricane” long before he signed a record deal.

“After we mastered it,” Combs explains, “we just put it on iTunes in the hopes that people would buy it, to help fund the rest of the EP. . .It’s kind of backwards, but it worked out.”

Re-released last October by Columbia, “Hurricane” spins the stormy story of an ex-girlfriend whose mere presence can wreck an otherwise sunny day. Appropriately, Combs and company perform the song in front of a rainy backdrop in the video below. The live performance puts an amped-up spin on the song, too, downplaying the programmed beats of the studio version in favor of distorted electric guitars and rough vocal harmonies. Additionally, watch Combs and band perform “When It Rains It Pours” below.

Combs heads back to Tennessee this week to kick off the festival season, with performances scheduled at CMA Festival in Nashville and Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee.
